Helmsdale is a picturesque Sutherland fishing village with a colourful harbour and a surprising history — the 19th-century gold rush in the nearby Strath of Kildonan still draws the occasional panner today. When the job is a small build or DIY project, the 8-yard inert skip is the one to reach for. It’s designed for heavy construction waste — brick, concrete, rubble, hardcore, soil, gravel, ceramics, tiles and glass — up to a 6-tonne limit, but it won’t take wood, metal, plasterboard, plastics or bagged general waste. It comes in two forms: a standard open-top skip, and a drop-door version whose fold-down rear door gives wheelbarrow access, so you can barrow heavy rubble and soil straight in rather than lifting it over the side.
For a general home or garden clearance, the 8-yard municipal skip is the flexible all-rounder. With an open top that swallows bulky items, it accepts a broad mix — black bags, wood, metal, plastics, glass, ceramics and tiles, plus brick, concrete, rubble, soil and gravel — all to a 6-tonne limit. The only thing it won’t take is plasterboard.
Where the clearance produces plenty of bulky but lighter waste, the 14-yard enclosed municipal skip gives you the room. Fully enclosed for security, it accepts black bags, wood, metal, plasterboard, ceramics and glass to a 6-tonne limit — and it’s the only skip in the range that takes plasterboard. Because it isn’t built for heavy material, brick, concrete, rubble, soil, gravel, tiles and plastics should go in one of the 8-yard skips instead.
